Ribbons

If she’d walk through that doorway
With ribbons tied up in her hair
If I could see before me
The rhythms that hang in the air
Then I would wait forever
And I would wait alone
And spend all my time
With sweet words and rhyme
The shadows she leaves on my bones

Her skin is white as paper
Her eyes as black as my pen
And though I cannot name her
She knows me better than men
Who walk among the graveyards
Who stalk in shadows of night
They call out my name
And when I refrain
She brings me her ribbons of light

She sleeps in fragrant orchards
She hides in crumbling towers
I wait in twilight for her
Through early morning hours
That’s when she comes to see me
She lets her ribbons unfold
I answer her call
And that’s when I fall
Into her rhythmic soul

And I am just an orphan
Who travels a wandering path
I’m constantly in motion
The future becomes my past
But she will live forever
In fields and forests and trees
In each ancient tomb
And sheltering womb
In rhythms of rivers and seas
